As the school term progresses, teachers’ energy level may need quick recharges along the way. It is essential for teachers to consciously adhere to a regimen to care for themselves and not let this slide into the background.
There are several ways to ensure that teacher-care is regular and a priority. Teachers can keep a calendar, marking out days for teacher-care activities and tasks. Next, assigning specific day/time to do teacher-care activities will ensure that these activities become habitual. Having a buddy to remind, encourage or keep company is another way to make the activity regular too.
Here are some areas that might help teachers be more aware of teacher-care:
1) Body and Physical
- Water Consumption
- Meals
- Exercise
- Grooming
- Wardrobe
2) Social and Emotional
- Connecting with self – affirmations, visualizations, journaling, etc.
- Connecting with family
- Connecting with friends
- Connecting with students and colleagues
- Connecting with community
3) Mental and Intellectual
- Reading
- Hobbies
- Learning new things
- Exploring new places
4) Spiritual
- Quiet Time
- Meditation
- Praying
- Connection to God/the Divine/Nature
5) Professional
- Acquiring new skills
- Attending workshops/courses
- Charting out one’s career path
- Knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses at work
Teachers can look at some of these areas on a daily, monthly, quarterly or yearly basis. From time to time, reset and recalibration are necessary to help refine the regimen.
Hence, teachers make time today for teacher-care. Happy and well-balanced teachers are great to be around with and they produce their best works too!
